Newsom met with members of California’s Congressional delegation and other lawmakers on Capitol Hill to advocate for additional recovery funding following January’s Los Angeles firestorms. According to the Governor’s office, rebuilding costs remain a primary concern for affected communities.

“This week I met with members of Congress and federal partners to advocate for supplemental recovery funding for last January’s Los Angeles firestorms. Survivors have made one thing clear: the cost of rebuilding is the biggest obstacle. California has always stepped up for this country in moments of crisis. Now we need the President and Congress to step up for the people of Los Angeles,” said Governor Gavin Newsom.

The Governor met with Senator Andy Kim of New Jersey, who serves on the Homeland Security Committee overseeing FEMA. The discussion included wildfire recovery efforts, healthcare policy, foreign policy, and voting rights.

Newsom also met with members of the California Congressional Delegation, including Senator Alex Padilla, Senator Adam Schiff, Representative Brad Sherman, Representative Judy Chu, and Representative George Whitesides. Additional meetings included conversations with Senator Raphael Warnock of Georgia and Senator Lisa Blunt Rochester of Delaware.

In the afternoon, Newsom joined members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus for a roundtable discussion. The discussion focused on immigration policy, voting rights, redistricting, and ongoing wildfire recovery efforts in Los Angeles.

The meetings follow earlier discussions in Washington, D.C., including a meeting with U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lee Zeldin regarding wildfire recovery funding and contamination issues in the federally managed Tijuana River region. Newsom also met with House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Representative Sydney Kamlager-Dove, and members of the Congressional Black Caucus to discuss voting rights and related policy matters.
